Cute Towns in California

Cute Towns in California

I was born and raised in California, and I’ve been to a lot of the cutest towns in the state. From family trips to the Central Coast to wine country retreats in Sonoma Valley and island escapes to Catalina, I’ve covered a lot of the highlights.

My travels have given me the opportunity to discover a lot of pretty towns up and down California. I’ve always been amazed by how many adorable places there are, and I can’t wait to tell you about my favorites.

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list of every attractive town in the state. It’s my personal list of favorites, and I hope it inspires you to get out and explore some of these spots yourself. I’ll add more to the list as I travel, so you can bookmark this blog post or pin it on Pinterest for easy reference.

1. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Right on the coast in Monterey County, Carmel-by-the-Sea is my top pick for cute towns in California. From boutiques to beaches, cafes, and thatched-roof cottages, there’s a lot to love about this place.

I could spend days in Carmel (and I have!). The shopping is excellent; there’s everything from household names to independent stores and art galleries to browse. Add to that great restaurants and beloved bars, and there’s a lot to entertain visitors.

As if that’s not enough, Carmel is right on the coast. The beach here is beautiful, and you can walk to it from the main part of town. It’s worth a special trip, even if California’s classic coastal fog is here at the same time you are.

If that sounds like your kind of trip, you can book a place to stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea here. My top pick is Tradewinds Carmel. I’ve stayed here before and I love its central location and design-led rooms. It’s a great place to call home-away-from-home. You can book a room here.

2. Los Olivos

Another of my favorite towns in California is Los Olivos. This sweet little place is nestled in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Los Olivos dates back to the 1860s, when a stagecoach route came through the area and put it on the map.

Los Olivos is one of several cute towns in the Santa Ynez Valley (read on for more). It’s dotted with everything from beautiful boutiques to Old West shopfronts, loads of tasting rooms, and eye-catching Victorian houses. Add to that a Western chic atmosphere, and there’s plenty love about this town.

If that sounds good to you, you can book a place to stay in Los Olivos here. My top pick is the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern. It’s in a great location in the heart of town, and its bar is housed in a historic stagecoach stop. The rooms are beautiful, and there are lush gardens, a restaurant, an outdoor bar, and an inviting swimming pool on the grounds. If that appeals, you can book a room here.

3. Healdsburg

Next on my list is Healdsburg. This small town in Sonoma County sits on the banks of the Russian River in the heart of Northern California’s wine country. It’s famous for everything from its plaza to its shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms.

Surrounded by some of the best vineyards in Northern California, Healdsburg is a great place to come for a day trip, an overnight getaway, or a longer vacation. It’s an easy jumping off point for the wineries in Dry Creek Valley and other parts of Sonoma County, and downtown Healdsburg has loads to do and see.

When it comes to accommodation, you can take a look at options and book a place to stay here. There are lots of places, from hotels to vacation rentals. My favorite is the Grape Leaf Inn in Healdsburg. Right near the historic plaza, this B&B has charming guest rooms, good atmosphere, and refreshingly reasonable rates for the area. You can book a room here.

4. Sausalito

Another of my favorite towns in California is Sausalito. Located just north of San Francisco, this part of Marin County is known for its famous waterfront restaurants, cute boutiques, houseboats, and views of the San Francisco skyline.

I’ve been visiting Sausalito since I was a child, and I’m always amazed by how much there is to do and see here. From bayside shops to stand-up paddle boarding and seaplane tours over the San Francisco Bay, there’s something for every visitor.

One of the most popular ways to get to Sausalito is to rent a bike in San Francisco and cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge. After exploring the town, it’s easy to take a ferry back to San Francisco (and it allows you to avoid the big hill up to the bridge). It’s a fun way to get some exercise and see the North Bay at the same time. You can book the bike and ferry here.

Sausalito is one of the most popular day trips from San Francisco, but you can stay a night if you want to see more of Marin County. It will allow you to explore nearby places like Tiburon and Mill Valley. If that appeals, you can book a place to stay here. My top pick is Casa Madrona. Right in the heart of town, it has beautiful guest rooms and great views over the water. You can book your stay here.

5. Solvang

One of the most unique towns in California is Solvang. Founded in 1911, this Danish-inspired spot is renowned for its Scandinavian architecture, windmills, themed shops, and restaurants. It’s one of the most famous places in the Santa Ynez Valley, and people come from all over the world to walk around this little slice of Americanized Denmark.

It’s fun to explore the streets, soak up the windmills, and window shop at the souvenir shops and bakeries. There are horse-drawn trolleys, a Little Mermaid statue like the one in Copenhagen, and other eye-catching gems to take in.

If Solvang sounds like your kind of getaway, you can book a place to stay here. My top pick is the Vinland Hotel and Lounge. When I stayed, I loved the contemporary decor and location in walking distance of the heart of town. You can book a room here.

6. Cambria

Next on my list of cute towns in California is Cambria. Just inland from the ocean on the Central Coast, this place is a gem. From enchanting restaurants to fun shops and historic bars, there’s a lot to love about this place.

Cambria is a great town to walk around, shop, eat, and explore. It’s also close to popular places like Morro Bay, Hearst Castle, and Paso Robles. That makes it a great place to stay on a long weekend getaway on the Central Coast.

If that appeals, you can book a place to stay in Cambria here. My top pick is El Colibri Hotel & Spa. This Tuscan-inspired escape is nestled between the coast and the hills. I’ve stayed here and I love the spacious rooms with their fireplaces and views of the wooded area behind the property. You can book a room of your own here.

7. Sonoma

The town of Sonoma is another of my favorite places in California. This historic spot in wine country is famous for its plaza, shops, historic mission, restaurants, and tasting rooms. It’s a great place to spend a day or more exploring.

Add to that beautiful scenery and an abundance of wineries in the surrounding area, and there’s every excuse to spend time here. My Sonoma itineraries can give you more ideas for things to do in and around the town.

If all that appeals, you can book a place to stay in Sonoma here. My favorite is the Sonoma Creek Inn. This hidden gem of a hotel is tucked away on a residential street right outside downtown Sonoma. It calls itself a “casual alternative to pricey wine country Sonoma hotels,” and I agree. If you want to follow in my footsteps, you can book a room of your own here.

8. Mendocino

Up on the Northern California coast, Mendocino is another cute town in California. The village has everything from coastal hiking trails to local landmarks, shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms. It’s a great place to visit on a Mendocino County road trip.

Whether you want to shop, eat, drink, or explore Mendocino Headlands State Park, there’s something for every traveler in Mendocino. There are beaches right in town, and great opportunities for getting outdoors and into nature in the surrounding area. If you want more ideas, take a look at my Mendocino itinerary. It includes other fun towns like Boonville.

If that sounds good, you can book accommodation in Mendocino here. My favorite is The Andiron. This retro-chic hideout features 1950s cabins dotted across five acres of land on the iconic Highway 1. When I stayed here I loved the natural surroundings and rustic atmosphere. It’s one of the most unique places to stay in California. If you want to follow in my footsteps, you can book a room here.

9. Avalon

On Catalina Island, Avalon is another of my favorite towns to visit in California. It’s the perfect destination if your idea of a good vacation is soaking up the sun and basking in the island vibes.

There’s plenty to do and see in and around Avalon. You can take your pick of activities and excursions. From outdoor pursuits like the Garden to Sky Hike to shopping, dining, adventure tours, swimming, spas, museums, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, sunbathing, and boating, there’s no shortage of ways to spend your time in town.

While a lot of people visit Avalon as a day trip from Los Angeles or elsewhere on the mainland, there’s enough to do and see here that it’s worth spending a night or more in town. My Catalina itinerary will show you why.

If this sounds like your kind of place, you can book accommodation on Catalina here. There are lots of options, including hotels, house rentals, and B&Bs. My favorite place to stay is the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel. It has great guest rooms and sweeping views over Avalon. If you want to follow in my footsteps, you can book a room here.

10. Julian

Another of the cutest towns in California is Julian. This 1870s gold country spot in San Diego County is nestled in the Cuyamaca Mountains.

Julian offers everything from gold mine tours to museums and art galleries. There are independent shops, cafes, and restaurants throughout the town as well. If you like getting outdoors, you can head to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, Palomar Mountain State Park, or Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve.

You can also climb a rock wall, go apple picking if you visit in fall, or taste local cider, wine, and beer. If you’re into gold gush history, there are self-guided historical walks you can do in Julian.

If this sounds like your kind of destination, you can book a place to stay in Julian here. There are lots of options for accommodation, including heritage hotels and inns. My top pick is the Julian Gold Rush Hotel, an 1890s national historic landmark with lots of charm. You can book a room here.

11. Nevada City

Nevada City is another cute town in California. From Gold Rush-era buildings to beautiful natural surroundings, this place is a real treat to visit. It’s particularly good if you like a place with an Old West feel.

In the heart of town, Nevada Street features historic facades and trees like old sugar maples and American sweetgums that were planted by gold miners in the middle of the 19th century. If you want to get into nature, the Cascade Canal Trail is just the ticket.

If that sounds good to you, you can book accommodation in Nevada City here. There are plenty of options, including hotels, houses, cabins, and more. My top pick is Broad Street Inn. A family-owned guesthouse set in a 19th-century Victorian, it’s right in Nevada City’s historic district. You can book a room here.
