Best Itinerary for Half Moon Bay in Fall

Today I want to share my travel itinerary for Half Moon Bay in fall with you. It's one of the best places to visit in California at this time of year, not least because of the seasonal events and highlights that happen in September and October. I'm here now and I'm looking forward to sharing my top picks for things to do here. I've included a map of all the spots in my guide, too.

Half Moon Bay in Fall

30 miles south of San Francisco on the Northern California coast, Half Moon Bay is known for its beaches, surfing, and laid-back lifestyle. It's full of natural beauty and great local produce and seafood, too. But what this part of San Mateo County is really famous for is its fall festivities.

Often referred to as the pumpkin capital of the world, Half Moon Bay is the perfect place to indulge in all things fall in California. The coastal region around here produces more than 3,000 tons of pumpkins each year, and the pumpkin patches are some of the best in the Golden State.

The Half Moon Bay pumpkin patches open in early September and stick around through the end of October. That leaves plenty of time to head to Half Moon Bay and enjoy fall at its finest. They make this one of the best places to go for Halloween in California.

But it's not just about jack-o'-lanterns. The annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival is the event of the season, and the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off wows visitors and locals every year. Add to that highlights like Trick or Treat on Main Street, and there's a lot to love about Half Moon Bay in fall.

And that's to say nothing of the weather. Locals know the Northern California coast can be foggy in the summer months. But come September and October, the beaches are bursting with blue skies and sunshine. It's hard to beat a fall day in Half Moon Bay.

Which is why I'm so excited to be here now to take in the best of the season. I'm visiting mid-week because traffic getting into Half Moon Bay on the weekends can be fierce when the pumpkin patches are open. I'm also staying a night, which will allow me to take my time and experience the best of what this part of the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer.

Half Moon Bay Itinerary

Along with a friend, I drive into to Half Moon Bay on California's iconic Highway 1. The trip takes us past stunning coastal scenery, and we arrive full of images of rock formations and cliff-side beaches in our heads.

Where to Stay in Half Moon Bay

We check into our room at the Beach House Hotel, where a spacious suite with a fireplace offers views of the Pacific Ocean and Pillar Point Harbor. I love how the windows overlook sailboats and pelicans.

The all-suite boutique hotel is in a great coastal location on the Cabrillo Highway not far from the downtown area. With an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and hot tub, it has everything we need to relax and indulge while we're on the road.

Breakfast

After getting settled in, we embark on a whirlwind Half Moon Bay itinerary. We start with breakfast at Granola's Coffee House. This rustic roadside cafe offers everything from espresso drinks to house-made baked goods, vegan and gluten-free options, and waffles.

I order a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and it's the perfect way to start the day. We enjoy our meal at a wooden table before heading off to our next stop.

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Patches

From Granola's Coffee House it's a short drive to two of the best pumpkin patches in Half Moon Bay in fall. These places are particularly special to me because I used to come to HMB as a child to pick out my Halloween pumpkins every year.

We start at Farmer John's Pumpkin Patch, which is bursting with pumpkins and gourds in all shapes, sizes, and colors. There are buckets and bathtubs full of them, and it makes for a photogenic atmosphere.

Farmer John's also offers hayrides through the fields, a tipi with readings for children, and an annual Bernese Mountain Dog Day (aka Berner Day) every fall.

We have fun walking around and taking in all the pumpkins, from Atlantic Giants of up to 1,500 pounds to mini ones in a range of colors.

Next door, we visit Andreotti Family Farm. Smaller and quieter, this place has an abundance of pumpkins and a big corn maze out back.

The farm was established in 1926, and it's still family-run. It was one of the first farms to join the farmers' market movement in 1943, and today it offers a wide variety of winter vegetables and other produce.

We can't resist poking around the stands, which are laden with pumpkins and seasonal corn topped with dried husks. They all sit under wooden pergolas decorated with colorful flags.

Downtown Half Moon Bay

When we finish exploring the pumpkin patches, we drive into downtown Half Moon Bay. Historic Main Street and the surrounding roads are full of fun shops, cafes, wineries, and restaurants.

We start at SWEET55, a place making artisanal Swiss chocolates. The owner, Ursula Schnyder, is Swiss, and she talks us through the chocolate-making process and lets us try a few samples.

The chocolate is freshly made in small batches, and it tastes amazing. I can't help buying a box to take with me when I go.

From SWEET55 our trip to Half Moon Bay in fall continues with lunch at Pasta Moon, a farm-to-table Italian restaurant on Main Street. Its ethos is to give back to the community and support local coastal farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and gourmet artisans.

The spacious dining room is just the spot for heirloom tomato caprese salad and fresh linguini with ahi tuna. The local produce shines through every dish, and the lunch is as good as the chocolate was.

After lunch we head to the next stop on our Half Moon Bay itinerary. This one is a wine tasting at Barterra Winery. A family-run place on Main Street, it's set back in a pretty courtyard and serves a range of varietals in the tasting room.

Founded in 2005, Barterra offers wines from California’s top vineyards. The winery focuses on working with small farmers and producers, and its hands-on approach involves visiting the vineyards on a regular basis.

We're impressed by the wines and tempted to stay all afternoon talking with our host. I also like that the winery offers live music on weekends. It makes me feel tempted to come back and experience it firsthand.

Sunset

After the wine tasting, we return to the Beach House Hotel for a dip in the outdoor hot tub. It's the perfect way to indulge as a classic California sunset paints the coast pink and yellow.

Dinner

When night sets in, dinner is so close we can walk down the beach to get to the restaurant. Sam's Chowder House is famous, and we can't wait to tuck into a delicious (and sustainable) feast from the ocean. The restaurant is reminiscent of a New England seafood house, and the chef has won multiple awards.

The lobster roll is divine, and the crab cakes and halibut go down a treat. It all tastes great, and I like it as much as I enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of the oceanfront dining room.

Half Moon Bay in Fall

The next morning our trip to Half Moon Bay in fall comes to an end. We wake up early, check out of the Beach House Hotel, and drive along the coast.
