Best Itinerary for a Day Trip to Half Moon Bay in Fall

Today I want to share my guide to the best day trip to Half Moon Bay in fall with you. This coastal city in the Bay Area is one of my favorite places to visit in California during pumpkin season because of all the seasonal events and festivities that take place in September and October. I'm here for the day now and I'm looking forward to sharing my itinerary with you. I've included an interactive map, too.

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay in Fall

Just 30 miles south of San Francisco on the California coast, Half Moon Bay is famous for its beaches, big wave surfing, and chill atmosphere. It's a great place to visit at any time of year, but it's particularly popular in fall.

Referred to as the pumpkin capital of the world, Half Moon Bay is the ideal spot to get into all things fall in California. This place produces more than 3,000 tons of pumpkins each year, and the local pumpkin patches are some of the best in the Golden State.

Half Moon Bay's pumpkin patches open in early September and stay active through the end of October. That means there's plenty of time to travel to Half Moon Bay and soak up fall at its best.

There's more, too. The annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival is the main event of the season, and the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off impresses visitors and locals every October. Add to that highlights like Trick or Treat on Main Street, and this is one of the best places to spend Halloween in California.

Then there's the weather. Locals know the California coast can be foggy in summer. But come September and October, the pumpkin patches are often bursting with blue skies and sunshine. It's hard to beat a beautiful fall day in Half Moon Bay.

That's why I'm so happy to be here now to take in the best of the season. I'm visiting mid-week because traffic getting into Half Moon Bay on the weekends can be bad when the pumpkin patches are open. Read on for my itinerary.

Day Trip Itinerary

Along with a friend, I drive into to Half Moon Bay on California's iconic Highway 1. The trip from San Francisco takes us past the Bay Area's stunning coastal scenery, and we arrive full of excitement for what our day has in store for us.

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Patches

From the main part of town it's less than a 10-minute drive south to one of the best pumpkin patches in Half Moon Bay. This place has been recommended by a local friend who grew up here, and I can't wait to see it.

Bob's Vegetable Stand & Pumpkin Farm is packed with pumpkins and gourds of all sizes, shapes, and colors. There are wheelbarrows full of them and hay bales stacked with them, and it makes for a photogenic atmosphere.

Bob's is also picturesque in that one area has pumpkins displayed by color. From white to orange and green, it's easy to find a hue to love. There are also areas where different colored pumpkins have been artfully arranged to maximize aesthetic appeal.

We spend an hour walking around and taking in all the pumpkins. We challenge ourselves to pick out the perfect one for a jack-o-lantern, as well as the ideal ones for displaying in a decorative arrangement.

We love discovering that some of the pumpkins are still growing on the vines, too. Most pumpkin patches sell pre-cut gourds, so it's unique to see ones that are still connected to the earth.

At the end of the hour we pick up a few small pumpkins to take home and decorate our living rooms and front porches with. It's a great start to our day trip.

Lunch in Downtown Half Moon Bay

Leaving Bob's, we drive north into downtown Half Moon Bay. Historic Main Street and the surrounding area are full of cute boutiques, cafes, and restaurants.

We head to lunch at a place called Cafe Society. This cozy spot is just the ticket for a quick meal on a big day of exploring Half Moon Bay. It has everything from sandwiches to bagels and open-face tartines on offer, not to mention delicious-looking baked goods.

We order food at the counter and tuck into our lunch at one of the tables. As we eat, we chat with a couple locals and have a surprise meeting with an old friend we both knew in San Francisco a number of years ago.

Pumpkin Patches

After lunch, we head to our next autumnal extravaganza. This one is called Repetto's Pumpkins. Right on Highway 92 near downtown Half Moon Bay, it has loads of pumpkins and a big corn maze.

Like Bob's, Repetto's has pumpkins laid out in color-coordinated groups. It also has hay bales for photo shoots, boxes full of small gourds, and bins with colorful dried corn and maize. There's also a farm stand called HV Produce on site.

We spend time sifting through boxes to look for the perfect decorative gourds, then pay the fee to enter the corn maze. We're some of the only people here, and it's peaceful and pleasant under the bright October sun.

From Repetto's we drive a few minutes inland on Highway 92 to get to Pastorino's Pumpkin Farm. This place has agritainment written all over it. Bigger and more commercial than the other places we've visited on our day trip, it has everything from a petting zoo to tractor rides, a shop, and larger-than-life art installations.

We dive right into the fun, enjoying a ride on a tractor, saying hello to the sheep, and taking pictures of all the seasonal displays. We pop into the shop to browse the Halloween decorations, almost forgetting about the pumpkins themselves.

As we explore the wonderful world of Pastorino's, we catch a glimpse of another pumpkin patch across the street. Lemos Farm is a family-friendly place, and it looks ripe for children's birthday parties.

Half Moon Bay in Fall

After getting our fall fix at Pastorino's, our day trip to Half Moon Bay comes to an end. We hop back in the car and drive north along the coast to San Francisco.
