5 Dog-Friendly Hikes in the Bay Area You'll Love
Today I want to bring you my guide to the best dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area. If you love your furry friends as much as you enjoy Northern California's beautiful scenery and spectacular views, this list will show you some of the top places to go hiking near San Francisco. From Marin County to the Peninsula, waterfall hikes to Pacific Ocean trails, it has you covered. I've included a map, too.

Dog-Friendly Hikes in the Bay Area
Given how much San Francisco Bay Area residents love their canine companions, there are lots of dog-friendly hikes near the city. Whether you want to go to Marin County, the East Bay, San Francisco, the Peninsula, or elsewhere, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to Bay Area hikes with dogs.
And that's to say nothing of terrain. Love waterfalls? There's a hike for you and your pup. Like Pacific Ocean views? The Bay Area has you covered. Want woodland, rolling hills, or mountains? Check. Check. Check.
I've been hiking with dogs in the Bay Area my whole life. Having grown up in Silicon Valley, I walked many of the dog-friendly trails in the Bay Area with my family as a child. From Windy Hill in Portola Valley to Arastradero Preserve in Palo Alto, we loved getting outdoors with our big Standard Poodles.

As an adult, I've done all the hikes on this list with my other half's Mini Goldendoodle. From the North Bay to San Francisco and the Peninsula, we've trekked a lot. This list has my favorites. The pup has enjoyed them as much as I have, and we can both recommend them from personal experience (although I'm a bit more vocal about them than he is!).
I'll add more hikes to this blog post as I write about them, so you can bookmark it or pin it on Pinterest for easy reference. Given how much we enjoy hitting the trails, I know I'll be publishing another soon.

Tips for Hiking with Dogs in Northern California
As with all Northern California hikes, make sure to bring water for you and your dog, towels or blankets for your car in case Fido gets muddy or dirty, a leash (sounds obvious, but I've seen it happen), and bags to clean up after any mess left on the trail.
Don't forget to check both you and your furry friend for ticks at the end, either. They're common on trails in the San Francisco Bay Area, and they can cause Lyme disease in both humans and dogs.
Above all, have fun!

1. Cataract Falls Hike
First on my list of the best Bay Area hikes with dogs is the Cataract Falls trail in the North Bay. Four-legged friends are allowed on-leash here, and it's a popular place to hit the hills after a big storm.
Located just off the Fairfax-Bolinas Road near Stinson Beach, this one is in the Mount Tamalpais Watershed. A protected mountain area, it's known for its streams, reservoir, and redwoods.
Cataract Falls is one of the most popular waterfall hikes in Marin County and the Bay Area. It features a narrow woodland path that hugs a series of small falls cascading down Cataract Creek.

A moderately challenging trail, it entails walking up uneven stone stairs and across narrow footbridges, and enduring a decent amount of elevation gain. If you go after heavy rain (which is when the falls are at their best), it also means muddy paws (and potentially muddy everything) for your pup.
The Cataract Falls hike can be done as an out-and-back or a loop. The former is around 3 miles on the Cataract Trail (1.5 miles each way). It involves an elevation gain of approximately 1,055 feet.
The loop hike is around 7.5 miles on a number of different trails. It involves an elevation gain of approximately 1,985 feet. You can see a map of both routes on my blog post about the Cataract Falls hike for further details.

The amount of time the hike takes depends on your fitness level and how fast you and your dog want to walk. The 3-mile hike takes around 2 to 3 hours, and the 7.5-mile loop trail takes around 3.5 to 5 hours. If you're in great shape, you can do it faster. If your dog walks slower, it could take longer.
You can do this hike any time of year, but because the waterfalls are the main attraction, it's best to do it after heavy rain. In Marin County's case, that usually means the winter months. If you can time your trek to coincide with a break in stormy weather, you'll get to see the falls at their best.

2. Montara Mountain Hike
Next on my list of the best dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area is Montara Mountain. Spanning McNee Ranch State Park and San Pedro Valley County Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this peak is an ideal spot to get outdoors and into nature in California's San Mateo County.
The mountain rises 1,898 feet above sea level. The area around it is home to hiking trails that lead to the North Peak and other destinations in and around Montara State Beach. It's a great day trip from San Francisco.
Montara Mountain is located just south of Pacifica on the Pacific Ocean. It covers 690 acres and it’s open from 8am to sunset. There are a number of hikes you can do here, all of which are dog-friendly. They range in distance and difficulty, so there’s an option for every fitness level.

If you want an easy hike, the 1-mile Gray Whale Cove Trail is the best choice. It will take you from Gray Whale Cove State Beach to Montara State Beach and Highway 1.
After a short hill at the start, the path is relatively flat and has panoramic views of the beaches. The trail sits right on the coastline, so you can take in the ocean scenery the whole way.
If you and your dog want something a bit more challenging, you can start on the Gray Whale Cove Trail and continue on the North Peak Access Road or Old San Pedro Mountain Trail. Both involve a gradual climb, so they’re more challenging than the Gray Whale Cove Trail (but not too difficult).

The former is a fire road, so it's a wide-open trail. The hike is 3.9 miles each way, and it will take you to the top of Montara Mountain. You can admire great views of the coast and the entire Bay Area from the peak.
The latter has more twists and turns, but it’s also a good option. The trail leads to Pacifica, and it crosses the North Peak Access Road and joins it for a while. You can switch onto the road to reach the North Peak if you want to. It’s 3.2 miles each way.
Lastly, the Montara Mountain Trail is a relatively challenging path that starts from San Pedro Valley County Park and leads up to the North Peak Access Road. From there you can follow the road to the top of the mountain. It’s 2.1 miles each way.

Interspersed among the official trails are lots of smaller paths you can take to switch from one to the other or take shortcuts. You can see the details and map on my blog post about a Montara Mountain hike if you want more information.
3. Oakwood Valley Trail
Next on my list of dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area is the Oakwood Valley Trail. This moderately challenging hike is a good one if you and your canine companion want to get outdoors in Marin County.
The trail is dog-friendly and not as steep as some of the others in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, so it’s the perfect option if you want to go for a fun walk in the woods.
Oakwood Valley is located just north of the Marin Headlands. It's home to the largest stand of oak and bay forest in the Golden Gate National Parks. Over 500 plant species grow here, and the area features a grassland and mixed woodland habitat.

The Oakwood Valley Trail is 2.58 miles round-trip. It’s relatively flat at the beginning and end, and it has an optional hilly section in the middle with lots of stairs.
That's because the hike is part loop trail and part out-and-back. It starts on the single-track Oakwood Meadow Trail, then meets the Oakwood Valley Trail (sometimes called the Fire Road Trail). From there it goes all the way up to where it meets the Alta Trail.
When you reach the Alta Trail, you can turn around and retrace your steps to where the Oakwood Valley Trail meets the Oakwood Meadow Trail, then hike back to the parking area via the fire road.

The Oakwood Valley Trail meets Tennessee Valley Road right near where the Oakwood Meadow Trail does, so you’ll only have to walk a short distance to get back to your car once you reach the road at the end.
The hike begins at an elevation of 33 feet and reaches an elevation of 621 feet at its highest point. Most of the gain happens on the out-and-back section in the middle, so you can skip that part and just do the loop if you and your dog want a flat walk.
The trail is well-groomed and well-marked, so it’s straightforward to follow. It’s wide in most places, so there’s room for groups if you want to do the hike with a larger party or more dogs. You can see the full route and map on my blog post about the Oakwood Valley Trail.

4. Crosstown Trail
Next on my list of dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area is the Crosstown Trail in San Francisco. It will take you and your furry friends from Candlestick Point in the southeast of the city to Sutro Baths in the northwest.
At just over 17 miles in length, this legendary hike will take you through Visitacion Valley, McLaren Park, University Mound, College Hill, Glen Park, Laguna Honda, Forest Hill, Golden Gate Heights, Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, Baker Beach, Sea Cliff, and Lands End.
It's a great one to do if you and your canine companions want to see a lot of the City by the Bay and explore areas most people (even locals) miss out on. If you're interested, you can see all the details and maps here.

5. Double Cross Trail
Next on my list of the best dog-friendly hikes is the Double Cross Trail in San Francisco. The sister hike of the Crosstown Trail, this one will take you and Fido from Fort Funston in the southwest of the city to Pier 23 in the northeast.
At 14 miles in length, the route passes through Lake Merced, Stern Grove, Twin Peaks, Tank Hill, Buena Vista Park, Alamo Square, the Civic Center, Nob Hill, Chinatown, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, and the Embarcadero waterfront.
This is a great one to do with your dog if you want to see both local and well-known parts of San Francisco. If that appeals, you can see the maps, route, and details here.
